On Saturday, 11th July, 2020, the Chhattisgarh High Court and the State Legal Service authority organized India’s first E-Lok Adalat as an attempt to settle the pending cases by following precautionary measures amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The session was commenced by Chief Justice of Chhattisgarh High Court P. R. Ramchandra Menon. Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra, Executive Chairman of the Chhattisgarh State Legal Services Authority stated, “Over 3 thousand cases will be heard in more than 200 benches of various districts across the state including the  high court in Bilaspur. There will be live streaming of an e-Lok Adalat to be inaugurated by the high court Chief Justice P. R. Ramachandra Menon.” The COVID-19 outbreak has critically woken the fiscal crisis faced by lawyers and their parties. Organising Lok Adalat on a digital platform is an approach to bring relief to the lawyers and aggrieved parties. Justice Mishra said, “Cases related to money like settlements, accident claims, bouncing of cheques besides family disputes among others are usually resolved by Lok Adalat.” He added, “All district courts and tehsil courts along with the high court will be part of the E-Lok Adalat.” The lawyers and parties can also present their case via WhatsApp video call, in case of difficulties joining in the video conference, as stated by Justice Mishra and further added that if the first time experiment to hold E-lok Adalat is successful, it will be continued further.
